From a newbie’s point of view
I understand there are a few basic rules when it comes to etiquette in an on-line critique group. Of course, these rules are obviously not hard-and-fast, nor are they adhered to strictly by any means, at least from what I, in my limited exposure to this type of group, have seen. Along with basic etiquette, there are a few other rules and resolutions that I will try to adhere to:
-
Thank the person who takes the time to critique my work
A critique for a critique, if and whenever possible.
Remember its just my opinion; leave out the “you should’s” and include lots of “perhaps you could” etc.
As a newcomer, I feel I owe it to the person whose work I am critiquing to let them know it is all new to me (though, most likely they figured that out from the first sentence
)
I will critique not only fantasy (which is my favorite genre), but also Science Fiction, and maybe even some Horror (not my favorite)
I will critique newbies’ submissions, or submissions that have low critique counts. I am a newbie, I know what its like to wait with trepidation for your first critique.
I will be polite.
I will take all suggestions and constructive criticism, consider it carefully and learn from the knowledge and advice others’ have cared to share with me.
My writing will improve.
