Join an on line Writer’s Critique Group.

I have researched a lot on the topic of getting published recently. There seem to be so many good websites and blogs covering different facets of this, that its hard to know where to start.

So, as the song goes, I decided to “start at the very beginning..”

The main hurdle I had to face, and cross, was to make the decision that I was going to seriously pursue writing and that I was prepared to invest the time, money and effort needed to do so. Initially I toyed with the idea of self-publishing (or vanity publishing, as it is also termed.) While it seemed appealing, and a fast way to get into print, I decided to go the hard route of seeking out a publisher.

I have written a few books, a couple have been published by minor publishers. I have a book I’m currently working on that is almost final. After making the decision to pursue getting in print, my next decision was whether to work on getting my current novel out to publishers or agents, or if I should instead start with something else.

I read several very good articles on writing as a business, including this one by Victory Crayne called “Career Plan for Writers.”

Writers’ Critique Group
I promptly joined an on line writer’s critique group, and for the first few weeks spent time lurking on the site, and submitting enough critiques to keep my membership. I was working on a short story during this time, and once it was completed and I felt ready to have it critiqued I submitted it to this group. Its still in the queue, but at least its up there. I am now starting on my second short story, with my aim being to try to have something in the queue as regularly as I can.
Critiquing helps me assess my own stories. Learning to objectively view another’s writing, offer suggestions, and see other author’s strengths and weaknesses has helped me to be more objective about my writing.
Having to do a certain number of critiques to remain a member is forcing me to work and this work is revolving around writing! As I have to critique, I am motivated to also write so that I can benefit from other’s critiques (and all the work I’m doing in critiquing.) Its a win-win situation.
Having my work critiqued will eventually result in a tighter story, which will stand a better chance of being accepted for publication.

If you are interested in joining an on line writers’ critique group, there are ample to choose from. As my genre is fantasy, naturally I chose a group that specialize in this genre.
